What Makes A 2025 Quarter Valuable?
Let’s get right into the details behind the 2025 quarters — which many people realize look different than most of the quarters they’re used to seeing.
They’re not wrong. The obverse (head’s side) design of George Washington looks very different than the portrait of the first U.S. president that had been on quarters for years and years!
Some people have even noticed Washington no longer faces the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and want to know why. Well, here’s why.
There are 5 different 2025 quarter designs on the reverse (tail’s side), which depict:
- Tennis great Althea Gibson
- Suffragist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells
- Disability activist Stacy Park Milbern
- Astronomer Dr. Vera Rubin
- Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low
The 2025 quarters (the last issues of the American Women Quarters program) carry what was supposed to be the original portrait of George Washington back when Washington quarters were first released in 1932!
In fact, the Washington portrait was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, who is one of America’s first prominent female coin designers.
But while these are cool facts about 2025 quarters, none of this really explains why some of these American Women Quarters are rare or valuable.
The top 3 things that make 2025 quarters rare & valuable are:
The fascinating thing about this is you could have some of these 2025 quarters worth money right in your pocket change and not even realize it — unless you know what you’re looking for!
So, which 2025 quarters should you be keeping a lookout for?
I’m going to share that with you now…
2025 Quarters Worth Money
First things first, let’s dispel any notions that ordinary worn examples of any 2025 quarters are rare or worth more than face value. They’re not. The vast majority of 2025 quarters in pocket change are worth 25 cents.
And that’s OK — rare and valuable 2025 quarters are worth so much because they’re NOT easy to come by!
That being said, there really are valuable 2025 quarters you need to be looking for. They include:
#1 – All circulating 2025 quarters in grades of MS-66 or better
Did you know that circulating coins in top-notch condition are usually quite rare?
I want to make sure I’m making the correct distinction here. I’m NOT talking about circulated (past tense) coins that you plucked out of your pocket change. Those are usually just worth face value.
No… I’m talking about circulating (present tense) coins that are designed to be spent as money and are usually found in pocket change.
If you happen to find an uncirculated example of a 2025 quarter that has very few nicks, scratches, or other imperfections… it COULD be worth a lot of money.
Why’s that?
Because coins struck for circulation tend not to receive the tip-top care when being struck at the Mint or being transferred from the Mint to the Federal Reserve Banks or while in transit to your local bank. The more jingle-jangle those quarters experience, the greater chance for dings and scratches that can significantly lower the value of your coin.
And that’s why any 2025 quarter with a grade of Mint State 66 or better is worth keeping. It will be worth at least $10 to $15 — and possibly more if that specific issue is known for quality problems.
So, how do you find uncirculated 2025 quarters in circulation?
Your best bet is to search for them in rolls of quarters.
In this video I’m sharing some of my best tips for finding valuable quarters in coin rolls:
#2 – All 2025 quarters with errors
When you think of 2025 quarter errors worth money, you’re probably conjuring up images of two-headed coins or quarters struck with gold. But the reality is crazy errors like that really don’t happen.
However, there are some pretty wild 2025 quarter errors worth money you should know about. They include:
Smooth Edges or NO Ridges
Find a 2025 quarter with smooth edges and no ridges?
You might think it’s an error — until you realize that edge wear is extremely common on quarters.
Why? Because they’re commonly used in vending machines, which result in concentrated wear on the edges of the coin due to the way coins are used in conjunction with vending machines.
You’ll usually put your fingers on the edge of the coin to place it into the coin slot, then the coin rolls on its edge along a path through the coin-receiving mechanism until it’s arrives — often edge-first — in the coin storage chamber.
If you find a smooth edge, no edge ridge 2025 quarter, it’s worth face value.
However, if you land a 2025 quarter that has a smooth edge and ALSO no rim AND it’s a little thinner and wider than a normal quarter… you likely have a broadstrike error coin! These are worth about $20 and up.
Off-Center Strikes
When a coin isn’t struck exactly on center, it becomes an off-center error.
This. usually arises from coin dies being misaligned or the blank planchet itself not being squarely seated where it needs to be between the obverse and reverse dies.
At any rate, an off-center strike is a drastic and highly visible error!
Depending on the magnitude by which the strike isn’t centered or what elements are still present despite the improperly centered strike, values will range greatly:
- A 2025 quarter that is 3% to 5% off center could take $25 or $30.
- An off-center strike missing around 50% of its design yet still showing a complete date can be worth $250 or more.
Rotation Errors
Look at a 2025 quarter heads-up — you’ll notice that the Washington portrait is facing correct side up.
Now, flip that coin directly left or right, and you should see the tail’s design appear totally upside down.
Or do you?
If the obverse and reverse design aren’t oriented 180 degrees opposite each other, then you may have a rotation error on your hands!
Now, bear in mind, a lot of these errors are faked — and you’ll need to have a real coin expert evaluate your coin, if you believe you possess such an error.
Anything less than 15 degrees off isn’t really worth much — if anything — over ordinary values. But values start ticking up as the rotation error approaches 30 to 45 degrees.
Beyond that, values start climbing pretty high! Prices vary depending on the number of degrees by which the rotation is off and can reach above $100.
#3 – All 2025 quarters with doubled dies & other varieties
What’s a variety?
It’s the kind of oddity that occurs on a coin NOT because of a mishap on the striking press but because of a change that occurred — either intentionally or unintentionally — that involves the design or appearance of the coin from the die (the device that imprints a design onto the blank planchet).
Some of the most popular and valuable die varieties to look for on 2025 quarters are:
Doubled Dies
This has to be the most well-known of all the major die varieties. It’s the type of variety that shows doubling of the design, lettering, or another element of the coin. This is caused by doubling of the design on the die and NOT because it was double struck on the press.
The 2025 doubled die quarter value depends on the degree and location of the doubling itself, as well as the classic metric of supply versus demand. However, other doubled dies on modern quarters can be worth quite a lot.
Take, for example, the case of a 2024 doubled die quarter featuring Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. This 2024 doubled die quarter value is somewhere around the $75 to $100 mark.
Die Breaks
Dies may strike tens of thousands of coins before becoming too worn for service. And, with this in mind, dies are routinely replaced throughout an operating period.
However, sometimes dies begin showing signs of wear and tear before Mint officials are aware — resulting in some unusual artifacts on the coins that are struck by these worn dies.
The most outward signs of die wear are die breaks and die cracks, which result in raised lines (sometimes straight, sometimes jagged) across the obverse or reverse.
Major die breaks, including a type of break known as a cud, can go for hundreds of dollars. Lesser die cracks may score only $10 or $25.
Abraded Dies & Missing Details
Missing design elements catch the eye of many astute coin collectors, like the “IN GOD WE RUST” Kansas quarters of 2005.
Such flubs happen as a result of either grease-filled dies or die abrading.
- A grease-filled die is probably what you’d think it is: a die that has grease (or a similar foreign material) lodged in some part of the die, obscuring that part of the design from properly striking up.
- An abraded die occurs when a Mint worker over-zealously polishes part of a damaged die to the point of utterly destroying a design detail!
Values for 2025 quarters with abraded dies or missing details vary, depending on the magnitude and prominence of the missing design element.
Generally speaking, a 2025 quarter missing a design element due to die abrasion or a filled die could go for $10 or more.
