Fun Facts About 2014 Pennies
The 2014 Lincoln penny is a regularly circulating coin that is very common, as billions were made. All told, more than 8.1 billion examples of the 2014 Lincoln cent were minted.
Since 1982, circulating Lincoln pennies have been struck in a copper-plated zinc composition. That means 2014 pennies really aren’t made from copper or bronze, per se — at least not in the sense of virtually all Lincoln cents made before 1982.
The Lincoln penny, which was originally released in 1909, carries a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse (“heads side”) designed by Victor David Brenner. His initials, “VDB,” are seen in tiny letters below the bust of Lincoln.
The Union Shield design on the reverse (“tails side”) was first issued in 2010. It was designed by Lyndall Bass and represents Lincoln’s ability to keep the nation whole during the Civil War.
Now, let’s talk about how much 2014 pennies are worth today…
2014 No Mint Mark Penny Value
The 2014 no mint mark penny was struck at the Philadelphia Mint — where 3,990,800,000 of these coins were made. They are extremely common in circulation.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
- Because they contain so little copper or other valuable metals, 2014 no mintmark pennies are generally worth only face value if worn.
- However, if you find a new-looking 2014 penny in pocket change or in a bank roll, it could be worth more. A 2014 Lincoln penny in typical uncirculated condition is usually worth 10 to 30 cents. Not bad for a penny, right?
- It gets even better… If you find a 2014 penny in top uncirculated grades, it could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars! Consider the record price for the most valuable 2014 no mint mark penny, which was graded MS69RD by Numismatic Guaranty Company and sold for $1,995 in 2018.
2014-D Penny Value
The 2014 Lincoln cent with the “D” mint mark is a coin that’s worth more than face value in uncirculated grades.
The 2014-D penny was struck at the Denver Mint, which usually strikes its coins with a “D” mintmark. So, the “D” mint stamp is normal — all it means is that the coin was struck at the Denver Mint.
The Denver Mint produced 4,155,600,000 pennies in 2014, making 2014-D pennies very common.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
- If worn (found in circulation), a 2014-D penny is worth face value.
- Uncirculated 2014-D Lincoln pennies are worth much more — 10 to 30 cents apiece, on average.
- The most valuable 2014-D penny was graded MS69RD by Professional Coin Grading Service and sold for $2,200 in 2018.
2014-S Penny Value
Having trouble finding a 2014 penny with the “S” mint mark on it?
That’s because the 2014-S pennies weren’t struck for circulation. A total of 1,190,369 were produced at the San Francisco Mint for coin collectors. The 2014-S pennies were packaged in proof sets and sold directly to the public.
A 2014-S penny looks very different from an ordinary 2014 or 2014-D penny because of how they were made. Modern proof coins are made with polished blanks that are struck twice by specially prepared dies on high-tonnage presses to ensure every detail comes up on the coin.
While 2014-S proof Lincoln cents weren’t intended for circulation, they sometimes appear in pocket change nevertheless — because they were broken out of their mint holders and spent as regular money.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
- A 2014-S proof penny is generally worth $3 to $5 in normal condition.
- The most valuable 2014-S penny was graded PR70DCAM by Professional Coin Grading Service and fetched $132.50 in a 2014 auction.

A List Of Rare 2014 Penny Errors… And Their Values
Just as perfect 2014 pennies are worth much more than face value, mint mistakes can be worth a lot, too!
You might be surprised to find out that some 2014 penny errors are worth a lot of cash.
So, what errors should you be looking for? And how much are they worth?
Here are the most popular 2014 penny errors and varieties, as well as their current values:
2014 Doubled Die Penny Error
Looking for the 2014 double die penny value?
These rare and valuable 2014 penny errors are worth money, but they’re very hard to find.
The problem is that the most common form of doubling on a coin isn’t really a doubled die but rather just die deterioration. It’s sometimes difficult to tell machine doubling versus doubled dies.
Typically, a doubled die is spotted on a 2014 penny in these places: Lincoln’s eye, Lincoln’s tie, or the lettering on the obverse or reverse.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
- Many of the known 2014 doubled die pennies are worth $25 to $50 or more.
2014 Off-Center Penny Error
The off-center 2014 penny can be a very dramatic looking error coin. It’s definitely worth looking for!
For a coin to truly be an off-center error, it must be missing at least part of the design.
These errors can range from 1% to 99% off center.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
- Typically, 2014 off-center penny error coins are 5% to 10% off center, and they’re worth around $10 apiece.
- The most valuable kind of off-center 2014 penny error is about 40% to 60% off center AND shows a complete date. These coin errors can be worth $100 or more.
2014 BIE Penny Error
While doubled dies and off-center errors and varieties can be found on virtually any coin, one anomaly that is unique to Lincoln pennies is the BIE variety.
What is a BIE penny?
It’s a Lincoln cent that has a small, vertical die crack that roughly takes the form of a capital letter “I” and occurs between the “B” and “E” of “LIBERTY” on the obverse.
The 2014 BIE penny is a highly collectible coin! In fact, there are many collectors who try to collect at least one BIE penny from every year they can find.
Here’s how much they’re worth:
A 2014 BIE penny is worth around $7 to $15, depending on the condition of the coin and size and shape of the “I” die crack.
