Interesting Facts About 1974 Eisenhower Silver Dollars

The 1974 Eisenhower dollars represent the 4th year of the Ike dollar series — which ran from 1971 through 1978.

Most Eisenhower dollars were made from copper-nickel clad, though special collector versions were made from a 40% silver composition. From 1971 through 1974:

  • The U.S. Mint struck proof 40% silver Eisenhower dollars and sold them in handsome brown presentation boxes for $10 each.
  • Uncirculated 40% silver Ike dollars were packaged in cellophane holders and blue envelopes, and they sold for $3 apiece.

Many collectors regard the 40% silver proofs as “brown Ikes” and the 40% silver uncirculated specimens as “blue Ikes.” The brown Ikes and blue Ikes are big-time collectibles today!

The United States Mint also sold uncirculated and proof versions of the 1974 clad Ikes in mint sets and proof sets.

Claiming the title as the largest clad coin ever made by the United States Mint, Eisenhower dollars generally didn’t circulate as well as dollar bills. However, many were used in Nevada casinos. They were also popular with coin collectors.

The obverse (head’s side) of the 1974 one dollar coin was designed by Frank Gasparro. The reverse (tail’s side) features a modified Apollo 11 insignia — which is symbolic of the 1969 NASA mission that took the first men to the moon. Michael Collins, one of the astronauts on the historic moon-landing mission, designed the symbol for the Apollo 11 — which also carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

1974 Dollar Coin Value (No Mintmark)

The 1974 Eisenhower dollar with no mintmark is worth more than face value, regardless of condition. Even though the 1974 Ike dollars are made from clad rather than silver, they are nevertheless considered collectible and command small premiums even in circulated condition.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 1974 Ike dollars to the tune of 27,366,000 pieces, making them generally common coins.

Here’s what they’re worth:

  • In worn grades, they can bring $1.10 to $1.25 apiece.
  • In uncirculated grade, a 1974 dollar coin without a mint mark is worth $4 to $10.
  • The most valuable 1974 Eisenhower dollar with no mintmark was graded MS-67 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and sold for $6,600 in a 2021 auction.

They’re not rare unless they’re in super-high mint state grades — but because they’re made from silver, they’re worth much more than face value.

Rare 1974 One Dollar Coin Errors To Look For

As mentioned above, 1974 dollar coins with no mint letter on them were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and are worth regular value.

Any 1974 dollar coins with a “D” or “S” on them are worth normal value — as they were made at the Denver Mint and San Francisco Mint, respectively.

Those Eisenhower dollar coins are not among the silver dollar errors.

However, there are valuable 1974 Ike dollar error coins that you should be looking for! They include:

  • 1974 Doubled Die Dollar Coin Error – The 1974 Eisenhower dollar doubled die is a scarce coin. Depending on how dramatic the doubling is, these doubled die dollars can be worth $100 to $500 or more — especially if it’s a 1974 silver dollar doubled die. If you’re searching for 1974 doubled die Eisenhower dollars, look for doubling in the lettering, date, and design details — such as Eisenhower’s eye and Moon craters.
  • 1974 Off-Center Dollar Coin Error – If you find a 1974 off-center dollar coin, you’ve landed big money! An off-center 1974 dollar can be worth anywhere from $500 to more than $2,000 — especially if it’s a 1974-S silver dollar.
  • 1974 Broadstrike Dollar Coin Error – A 1974 Ike dollar with edge errors — such as no parallel lines (or reeding) or no raised rim — may be a broadstrike error. You can tell a broadstrike Ike dollar error from other edge / rim errors because the coin is usually wider than normal, has no raised rim, and shows no edge reeding. A 1974 broadstrike dollar is a very valuable error coin worth anywhere from $150 if it’s a clad coin to more than $700 for a 40% silver broadstrike error dollar.
