On August 6, 2009, the U.S. Mint released the third installment of the 2009 First Spouse Gold Coins program. This $10 gold coin honors Julia Tyler who was the second wife of President John Tyler. She was the first spouse from 1844 through 1845.

The Julia Tyler First Spouse gold coin is a half-ounce, .9999-fine gold coin with a face value of $10.
Proof versions of these First Spouse gold coins originally sold for $804 each, while uncirculated First Spouse gold coins were issued for $791.
The Julia Tyler First Spouse gold coin, while the third coin for 2009, is actually 1 of 5 First Spouse gold coins to be released this year — which is a break from the usual 4 First Spouse gold coins typically released each year.
The reason? Letitia Tyler was President Tyler’s first wife, but she passed away in 1842 after a long illness. Julia Tyler became the first spouse to pass away while in the White House. A First Spouse gold coin honoring Letitia Tyler was released in July 2009. In 1844, President Tyler remarried, making Julia Tyler the second First Spouse of the Tyler presidency.

A total of 40,000 Julia Tyler First Spouse gold coins are authorized to be struck by the U.S. Mint.
The 40,000-coin production will be split between both uncirculated and proof coins, with the total numbers for each of the 2 versions being determined by actual demand for the 2 specimen types.
There will be a 10-coin-per-household limit during the first week of the coin’s release. The U.S. Mint has stated that it will consider the possibility of adjusting (or even eliminating) purchase limits thereafter.
