Do you think you have a United States rare coin? I thought I did.

I was fishing around for some for the soda machine yesterday, when I found a 1974 nickel that looked strangely silver... or else strangely dirty.

I don't know if 1974 nickels are especially valuable in terms of rare coins or not, but I do remember my dad always telling me there were certain years that you were supposed to hold onto.

Something about...
Several years' worth of silver coins -- mostly nickels -- in a ziploc bag. ...pennies with wheat on the back
... coins with a "D" on them
... any silver coins (like how are you supposed to tell?!)
... and Susan B. Anthony $1 coins.

Anyway, I thought I'd do a little research to find out which U.S. coins are actually worth something these days.

And from now on, I'm saving them!...

The best sites on the web I found for quick access to coin values was Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers and Professional Coin Grading Service. Their sites are VERY up-to-date and make it easy to find the value of virtually any U.S. coin!

Another good site for general coin collecting information is the American Numismatic Association.

What's That Coin Worth?

Just to pick a FEW of the rare coins that I, personally, have come across... here are some coins you'll want to hold onto:

  • Wheat penny. Wheat Pennies (...worth 2 to 5 times their face value)
  • Steel Pennies (...supposedly VERY common; all are from 1943 and they stick to a magnet; worth up to a dime)
  • 1943 Copper Penny (...guess they primarily made steel pennies this year, making the standard copper penny rare for the year 1943; how does $20,000 sound?!)
  • Rare Indian Head Penny. Indian Head Penny (...who knew a penny could be worth up to 3 dollars?!)
  • Buffalo Nickel (...they're worth up to a dollar)
Buffalo Nickel - front. Buffalo Nickel - back.

What's Not Worth A Thing...

Susan B. Anthony coin.

The Value Of My Coin Collection

Our spare change jar -- an old Seyfert's Pretzels glass jar. Turns out, my 1974 dirty silver nickel is worth a whopping... 5 cents.

But I still felt the urge to rummage through the attic for all those old coins I'd been saving through the years!

--> Use this online tool to find out how much your jar of coins is worth!

I mean, what are the odds that I could be sitting on something of value?

Okay, here's what I found... It's not much, but the MAXIMUM value of my at this point looks to be around 3 dollars and 10 cents. That's from:

  • (2) 1964 silver Roosevelt Jefferson nickels (5x face value = $.25 ea)
  • (2) 1959 silver Roosevelt Jefferson nickels (5x face value = $.25 ea)
  • (1) 1943 mercury dime (10x face value = $1.00 ea)
  • (22) 1939-1958 wheat pennies (5x face value = $.05 ea)

Unless, of course, I take this guy's site into account, which states I could get around 50 cents to a dollar for each of my 1942-64 nickels! ... 88 of them at 50-cents each equals: $44! Guess I'll be holding onto those just in case. (The site claims $2 for "very fine" quality, which mine are not, so I deducted $1.50 each to account for the "well-circulated" condition of my nickels.)

...Ah well, I'm still "banking" on the fact that my stamp collection is worth something. My MOM will tell ya it is... She's the one who bought most of those "plate block sets of 4" for me through my elementary and high school years! I've got a few thousand dollars worth of "mint condition" stamps in FACE value alone!

A glance inside our spare change jar -- a bunch of pennies, a few buttons, and a couple golf tees. I don't golf, and Jim hasn't golfed in YEARS... yet all my life, there's always been a golf tee that finds its way into my spare change jar!

Fun Things I've Done With Coins

Ah well, maybe I haven't struck it rich yet, but I had a good time scavaging around for old coins!

Which reminds me... As a kid, we used to save up our pennies then take them down to the train tracks. We'd place a slew of them on the actual rails, then wait for a train to pass by. They would flatten them like pancakes, turning our pennies into mini copper saucers that we saved (for a few years), until we decided to start skipping them (like rocks) in the Mississinewa River.

Lynnette's stamp collection -- started in elementary school and stopped in college. Then, one year, my Dad had me convinced that was yet ANOTHER hobby I indeed needed to start (...in addition to my beer can collection, matchbook collection, rock collection, keyring collection, and stamp collection!). So my mission became to save one penny from every year, one nickel from every year, and so on. And I polished them all up nice & shiny too. (I would use a pencil eraser!) Little did I know at the time that cleaning your coin collection was a very BAD thing to do.

What I Learned Today...

Sometimes you've gotta look REAL hard to spot what makes a coin valuable... like this 1995 penny!

...does all this research make me an amateur numismatist now???

Hi, I found a 1994 nickel that looks like it is copper. Did they put copper in nickels in 1994 or is this a fake?

Posted by: Mel | September 29, 2005 7:02 AM

Hello all, I was reading over some of the messages on the web page...and i read that you were saying something about the 1943 copper penny well its so valuable because that year they were running short on copper and started making the pennys out of silver. Now the silver wheat back pennys are worth about 50 cents but the copper ones for 1943 are worth anywhere from 20,000-45,000! Just thought that you might like to know!

Tonya and Jennifer -

Hmmmm...
Maybe you've found a penny like this one... or if you're REALLY lucky, you found one like this.

One thing's for sure, you're not alone.

I am not an expert -- far from it. You would need to consult with an official coin dealer (check out these coin shows), a numismatist (aka coin collector), or one of the official coin guides.

You might also consider posting your question at the About.com Experts site (...though they don't really claim to be "experts" either), Google Answers, or any of these experts found through Google.

********************NOTE TO ALL COMMENTERS ABOUT COINS********************
If you wish to have your question about a particular coin answered, you're best bet is to post your email address here with your Comment. (You will have to type your email address BOTH... in the form used to post your Comment and in the actual text of your Comment.)

Odds are... in time, anyone who's interested or knowledgeable about a coin matching your description will show up here -- they'll find your Comment and will contact you directly.

I have a mecry 1974 penny and it is silver it is just like the copper one but silver,so how much is it worth?

Posted by: corey grant | February 24, 2006 7:33 AM

I would like to point out that in the above article it says: "(2) 1964 silver Roosevelt nickels (5x face value = $.50 ea)
(2) 1959 silver Roosevelt nickels (5x face value = $.50 ea)"
-jefferson is on the nickel, not roosevelt, and the only time silver nickels were made was during WWII...plus 5x face value of a nickel is 25 $.25, not $.50

for all those questions everyone has, a great guide to coins is The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of United States Coins

for the copper nickels or nickels with a partial striking of the image, these are error coins and are more valuable than face value, and even more so depending on the type or amount of error

Posted by: Jason Knight | February 26, 2006 6:47 PM

Hey thanks, Jason.

Appreciate your clarification on the Roosevelt vs Jefferson nickels... and the bad math on the nickels.

You'll note the corrections above.

I just wanted you to know that 1964 Jefferson Nickels are not made of steel, they are made of nickel.

Posted by: Ben | June 16, 2006 12:37 PM

You are all wrong! 1943 pennys are not made of silver. They are made of steel with a layer of zinc on it. That's why they stick to magnets, silver isn't magnetic.

Posted by: Ben | June 16, 2006 12:40 PM

Bob,
I have an estimated value for you, 1 cent. Philadelphia pennies don't have mintmarks and any other philadelphia coin before 1980 don't have mintmarks.

Posted by: Ben | June 16, 2006 12:42 PM

Most of these coins are not worth much, espicially the wheat pennies, around 10 cents. I know a lot about coins and their values just email me at bkitko@hotmail.com

Ben -
Thanks SO MUCH for helping all these people with their coin questions!

We've been hoping that someone with some "coin sense" would chime in here.

Welcome. And thank you for taking the time to answer so many of the questions we've all had about pennies and such.

Are pennies your specialty? Or do you collect & study all coins?

Hi Lynnette,
Your Welcome, actually I study all type of coins. Mostly U.S. and I am very into it since I research new things just about everyday.

I found a nickel 2005 with half a head on one side on other side was mountains with a saying on it ocean in view of the joy could you tell me if this is worth anyting at all or if someone else seen this?

Posted by: Doris Pergande | June 20, 2006 4:51 PM

Doris Pergande,
The nickel you found is part of the westward journey series. It is based on Lewis and Clark. In 2004 they made two new designs of the nickel and in 2005 they made two more designs which yours is part of. Then in 2006 they went back to the reverse design of Monticello with a front view of Jefferson's face on the obverse. Your coin is worth 5 cents, unless there is something different with the half a head thing that I don't understand.

Posted by: Ben | June 21, 2006 8:39 AM

Doris Peragande,
I now understand the half a head. In 2004 they kept the obverse the same. In 2005 they changed it to the half a head of jefferson.

Hi. My aunt recently came across a double headed nickel with the date 1983 on one side and 1986 on the other. When it comes to coin values, I'm not very knowledgeable. I was just wandering if this coin would have any value or not. Thank you.

Posted by: Ashley | June 25, 2006 5:11 PM

My grandfather left me a lot of things in his estate. One lucky find was what I thought was an old box of unused shotgun shells. I thought they were fairly heavy for 'just' shotgun shells and I pried open the end on one of the shells and it was full of 1877 Indian head pennies. I opened another shell, more 1877 Indian head pennies. Turns out the entire box of shells was full of 1877 Indian head pennies. Each shell has 50 pennies in it and I have 25 shells. Are these pretty common? Either that or he liked that year for some reason. Either way, I still have them. It's pretty cool. I just keep them in the shells in the box. Perhaps one day, I may see what they're worth. Most of them look like the day they were minted. Thanks.

What would a 1941 U.S. nickle be worth today?

Posted by: GLENN BABIN | June 28, 2006 8:56 AM

I came across a half silver dime. Is it worth anything. I would think that it would be worth more than 10 cent.

Glen,
Not that much
Steven,
a half silver dime? no such thing.

I have a steel penny dated 1948 does not stick to magnet. help

Posted by: mary jackson | July 28, 2006 10:35 PM

The buffalo on the 2005 nickle, is there anything special about it? someone was telling me that if it had a little pee pee under him that, that was not to be there and they quit making them. Is there any truth to this? Thank You.

Posted by: Martie | July 29, 2006 11:35 AM

Mary Jackson,
The reason it does not stick to a magnet is the simple reason of that it isn't a steel penny. It is just a regular old 1948 wheatback penny worth 10 cents if anybody was desperate enough to buy it which i doubt would happen. You people need to do your research before you make a fool of yourselves.

I have a silver dollar I think. It is a 1921, and has an Eagle inside of a wreath of wheat on the back of the coin. The front has a Lady with something that looks like a head band or a tiarra in her hair. Is it worth anything?

I also have a half dollar with a Lady carrying what looks like flowers in her left arm and the sun in the lower left corner of the coin (this is all on the front of the coin). On the back there is an eagle. The coin is heavy.

Posted by: Robin Hromadka | August 12, 2006 10:21 PM

I have buffalo nickel that I am trying to see what it's worth. I tried researching it, but my nickel does not have a date, however, it does have the letter "e" on the top of the buffalo's back and the letter "s" at the bottom. How do I find out what it's worth? Were there any nickels made that did not have the date printed on the coin?

Posted by: Litaun Lewis | August 14, 2006 8:26 AM

I HAVE A VERY UNUSUAL COIN. IT IS HARD TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS. IT IS LIGHT BLACK WITH A FACE OF A DEVIL FACING TO THE RIGHT OF THE COIN AND THE BODY OF A BACK PART OF A HORSE. THE LETTERS AT THE TOP OF THE COIN IS I THINK CEAAL NOT QUITE SURE. THE BACK HAS A GALLOPING LIKE, WITH A DECORATIVE HEAD PEACE. IT HAS AN INDENT WHERE THE TAIL IS. IT HAS THE WORD COPY ON THE BOTTOM, IT'S LIKE IT HAS INDENTATION THAT RAISE UP IN CERTAIN PLACES ON THE COIN. MOST UNUSUAL. IF YOU CAN HELP ME I WOULD APPRECIATE IT. OR IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO MAY KNOW PLEASE HAVE THEM E MAIL ME.

I have a 1906 Indian Head penny in fairly good shape. However, on the front side, it has a very clear stamp of "L" and "O" and a "6" below the "L" and a "22" below the "O". On the reverse side, it has a clear stamp of "1907" over the upside-down side of the "cent" stamp. Anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to give me some insight.

Posted by: Jack | September 3, 2006 8:57 AM

I ran across your web page when researching a 1976 penny that I found. It has the state of Indiana, with Indiana's initials on the front. Has anyone else found one like this? I was just wondering if it might be a fake, or if someone might have done this by hand, because it is the only one that I have found like it. By the looks of the penny, and the state on the front, they look to have been made at the same time. Maybe it was pressed by accident?
Sincerely,
Jennifer Hill

---------------------------------------------> To Jeremy and others

SOMETIMES, people who have left a comment (and their email address) here or here have been contacted individually by collectors or professional.

(We are neither of these, therefore we don't offer pricing, values, or grading of coins through this site.)

However, if you don't put your actual email address in the BODY of your comment, they won't be able to find you!

Other than that, your best bet is to go through a "professional" organization like this or this.

Remember, you can always consult a coin pricing guide like here or here.

I have a 1907 penny, on the front side there is an indian like person on the front, and on the back is I think wheat, and I was wondering how much this would be worth.

hey I got a gold Susan B Anthony dollar Coin . I wonder how much does this worth?

Posted by: hai | November 28, 2006 5:11 PM

GABE,
If it is a 1943 silver penney you are talking about, it isnt silver. They are made of steel with a layer of zinc. And silver will not stick to a magnet.

Posted by: Hunter | November 28, 2006 6:36 PM

Jeff,
Dose the quarters stick to a magnet and when you drop them do they have a metal noise of kind of a plasticky noise. And when you test the sound trick do it on a flat, hard surface!

Posted by: Hunter | November 28, 2006 6:46 PM

Hai,
If you tell me what the year is on the gold Susan B Anthony dollar Coin i can give you an estimate of how much it is worth.

Posted by: Hunter | November 28, 2006 7:09 PM

Brittany,
I read your question about the Penny you were talking about. The Penny you are talking about is an INDIAN HEAD PENNY. And if you can tell me the condition of the coin i could get you a price of how much the coin is worth.

I have several old silver coins that I was wondering if maybe you would have an idea of their values. I do believe that all four of them are silver dollars. They are as follows:

1) 1804 Liberty Dollar, the front has a bust which I am assuming is lady liberty with 13 stars on it.7 on the left and 6 on the left. On the back it has 13 stars above the eagle and 6 stripes on the shield under the eagle.

2) This coin is dated 1874.Has a full view of again I am assuming is lady liberty. She is carrying a fig leaf in the right hand and a banner which states liberty on it. There is 13 stars on the front,7 of which are on the right hand side and 6 stars are on the left. On the back of this coin it says "United States of America" on the top with a banner under those words but the letters are to small for me to read. There is an eagle in the center and under the talons of the eagle it reads 120 grains 900 fine. Under those words it states "Trade Dollar". I also have one dated 1885 with all of the above markings.

3) The third coin is dated 1894. On the front is a side view of lady libertys head facing west, the wording on the top of the coin it reads "E*Pluribus*Unum". Again there is 13 stars on the coin. 7 on the left and 6 on the right. On the back it reads "United States of America" Under those words are the words "In God we trust". It states on the bottom under the eagle "One Dollar". I do not know where to begin to find out their values. Maybe you could help.

Sincerely

Dan Bush

Check on e-bay. Seyfert's pretzel jars are going for 15 to 30 dollars. I notice in the picture that yours has a university listed on the back. That could make it worth a lot more. Put you coins in a coffee can

Posted by: Harvey Barnhart | February 5, 2007 5:12 PM

Hey thanks, Harvey.

Good to know.
However, the university logo is just a see-thru vinyl sticker.

The good part: no sticky residue on my valuable glass jar.
The bad part: it's not a permanent logo, so it wouldn't boost the value of my valuable glass jar.

Thanks for sharing that info though! I had no idea.

I have a 1978 US silver penny (copper centered). Is this worth anything good --- besides an adrenaline rush :-)

*** Hey everyone ***

What do you know about coins? ...Probably more than I do, that's for sure!

We are looking for someone to write about U.S. Coins -- of all shapes, sizes, and varieties here on The Fun Times Guide website.

--> If you like to write, and you know a little something about coins email me for more information.

*********************************************

I have several 1943 pennies with the silver plate on the back, although, it is said these pennies are not valuable, I have never seen any of these pennies in circulation, ever? The ones I have were part of an estate settlement when a relative died. How come there not worth anything? And why aren't they still in circulation is there are so many?

Posted by: nicole b | March 31, 2007 12:10 PM

I found a quarter, I mean i took my brother's quarter to look for a coin to help his state coin collection. I found a coin with the date 1776 1976 with a dot in the middle. On the other side is a drummer, probably for the revolutionary war(Minuteman) and a torch with 13 stars around it in front of the man;s face. Also, the words "United States of America and Quarter Dollar" is remarkably larger, with the "of" not capatilized and E Pluribus Unum smaller and under the torch.

Just wondering in found a 1944 wheat penny that looks like copper is copper rare that year?

Posted by: tony | April 24, 2007 12:20 AM

Try this site: www.coinflation.com . Your nickels are actually worth almost 10 cents and pennies older than 1982 are worth more than 2 cents. All nickels have copper in them (actually they are 75% copper). The only nickels with silver in them were made during WW2, so your article is incorrect.

I have a 1973 penny with a symbol of South Dakota engraved on the "heads" side of the coin. Looks like it was engraved at the mint. What could it be worth?

Posted by: Scott | November 15, 2007 11:56 PM

Scott, the penny was engraved by a private company. It is not worth that much, maybe 10 cents or a quarter if somebody wants to buy it that much.

Lisa, same as with Scott's penny. The 1919 may be worth about a dollar depending on condition.

natacha, 1941 dime about $1.50

teale, It is Jefferson on the coin, not Washington.

Jeane, Liberty V nickels can have different values: from 3.00 to couple hundreds in the lowest condition.

1943 one cent are not silver, and are made out of zinc coated steel.

Two-headed coins are not made by the US mint. They are privately made by cutting two halves with a laser and glueing them together.

Any engravings are not produced by the US mint, they are privately done as a special commerative to something.

Any US coins made before 1965, not inc. 1965, are silver. Post 1964 are nickel and copper.

One cent coins with "wheat ears" on the back are worth saving, although the later years are worth about .10

Jefferson nickels before 1960 can be saved, but some are still worth a nickel.

If a coin is gold colored, they are gold plated and were made for like birthday gifts and are not really worth more than their face value, which is the value of the coin (face value of a dime is a $0.10.)

If any of you all found a nickel that is brown in color and thinks that it is copper than it is just plain dirty. Unless you weigh the mass of the coin and find it to be minted on a one cent piece, then it would be worth a lot..

Posted by: HC | November 16, 2007 4:10 PM

I have a 1965 nickel that looks like it has copper in it. I read above that 1965 should not have copper in it. Also this nickel has no mint mark.

I have a 1959 penny and the design of lincoln looks diffrent from the ones we see today.I also have a1968 penny that doesn't look like it is made out of the right medal.

Posted by: Trixie | December 2, 2007 5:04 PM

Walter, No two-headed quarters have ever been certified as authentic. These coins have been altered after leaving the mint and sold for novelty purposes. There has been one certified two-tailed coin however, so I'm not saying that it's impossible that you have a true mint error coin, just not very likely.

I was reading through these posts to answer some of you and came across one that made my jaw drop and gave me goosebumps. This post... Thanks.

If this is a true post and not a made up story then Mike you're going to be rich buddy. The 1877 Indian Head penny is by no means common what-so-ever and one of the rarest. If you have that many of them then what you have is known as a "hoard" and you should spend the money to have the whole hoard of 1877's graded and authenticaded by a 3rd party grading service and reported. NGC is a good company and can be found at http://www.ngccoin.com/ . If in good enough condition each one of these coins can easily be worth over $500 each. I just have to say...WOW. -Jay

I have a 1944 penny with the wheat stems on each side on the back and Lincoln on the front. How much is it worth?

Alot of posters have the same questions so I'm goin to answer some of the most common ones.

The pennies with 12-31-1974 stamped above the 1975 date are novelties, the 1976 pennies having the Liberty Bell on them are novelties, and the 1984 pennies having the red, white, and blue flag are also novelties. Novelty coins aren't worth anything unless you can find someone who just likes the coin. Technically you can't even spend the coin anymore because it has been defaced and passing defaced currency is illegal.

Now,the pennies that have Kennedy facing Lincoln on them are commemorative coins and worth probably somewhere around $4.00.

The people describing coins that have no detail on them at all and are just blank metal have what are called blank planchets. A planchet is the round piece of metal that they strike the coins on and sometimes they slip out of the mint without being struck into coins. Pretty neat to have but still only worth about a dollar.

People describing nickels that are missing half of the head or face could be describing "filled die errors" which are common and might be worth a few bucks to certain collectors, but generally not worth much more than face value.

People describing quarters that appear to be copper on one side probably have un "unfinished planchet" or "missing clad layer" error. These errors may be worth a little bit more and I would suggest looking them up on E-bay or having a local coin shop look at it. Still, I wouldn't count on it being very valuable.

For the people having buffalo nickels with no date on them. This is because the buffalo nickel had the worst-placed date of any other coin and thefore was worn off alot quicker than any other coins minted. Buffalos with dates worn off aren't worth much, if anything, to collectors. You may be able to get 4 or 5 bucks out of a bag of them on E-bay.

Posters having the nickels dated 1942 to 1945 that have a large mint mark (P,D, or S) on the reverse above the dome of Monticello have what are called "war nickels". During these years they used 35% silver in these coins to preserve nickel for the war. Having the 35% silver content does make these worth more than 5 cents. The price of silver being around $14.50/oz today makes the war nickels worth about 80 cents each.

Also, posters wanting to know how much thier silver coins are worth... So long as they are common dates and not extremely high grade you can expect a coin dealer to give you 9x face value for them (silver being 14.50/oz). That is every dime,quarter,half-dollar,or dollar before the year 1965. I still sometimes find 1964 Roosevelt dimes in my pocket change and thier worth almost a buck apiece!

Circulated Susan B. Anthony dollars you can use to buy groceries. There were several millions of these minted and they're not worth anything over face value. Sorry.
